  36. Windows 95 System Check is a tool that performs a basic test of your
  37. computer's hardware and software to ensure compatibility with Windows
  38. 95. Windows 95 System Check is not intended as a comprehensive
  39. diagnostics tool to check for every known Windows 95 incompatibility.
  40. Instead, this tool is designed to answer some common questions you
  41. might have before you upgrade to Windows 95.

  43. How to Use Windows 95 System Check
  44. ----------------------------------

  46. You can run Windows 95 System Check in Windows version 3.x, Windows
  47. for Workgroups version 3.x, Microsoft Windows NT(TM) version 3.x, and
  48. IBM(R) OS/2(R). If you want to run Windows 95 System Check in Windows
  49. version 3.0, make sure that the Ver.dll file included with this
  50. Application Note is in the same folder from which you run Windows 95
  51. System Check (W95check.exe). These files do not need to be on the hard
  52. disk in order for you to run Windows 95 System Check.

  54. To run Windows 95 System Check, follow these steps:
  55.  
  56. 1. On the Program Manager File menu, click Run.
  57.  
  58. 2. Type the following line in the Command Line box, and then press
  59.    ENTER
  60.  
  61.       <source>:\w95check
  62.  
  63.    where <source> is the drive letter of the floppy disk drive
  64.    containing the WW1247 disk, or the folder containing the Ww1247.exe
  65.    file you downloaded from an online service and extracted. (To
  66.    extract the Ww1247.exe file, switch to the drive or folder
  67.    containing the file, and then type "ww1247" without the quotation
  68.    marks.) For example, if you inserted the WW1247 disk in drive A,
  69.    type the following line:

  71.       a:\w95check
  72.  
  73.    Or, if you downloaded the Ww1247.exe file from an online service to
  74.    the C:\Download folder, type the following line:
  75.  
  76.       c:\download\w95check
  77.  
  78. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  79.  
  80. If you are already running Windows 95, Windows 95 System Check quits
  81. without performing a scan. For additional information about hardware
  82. and software compatibility issues, see the text files included with
  83. your copy of Windows 95, or consult the documentation included with
  84. the "Windows 95 Resource Kit."

  86. How Windows 95 System Check Works
  87. ---------------------------------

  89. Windows 95 System Check scans your computer for the following
  90. information:
  91.  
  92.  - Processor--It checks your computer's CPU to determine if it meets the
  93.    minimum requirement for Windows 95. It also checks for older
  94.    versions of the 80386 processor that are incompatible with Windows
  95.    95.
  96.  
  97.  - Memory (RAM) --It checks the amount of physical memory (RAM) in your
  98.    computer to determine if it meets the minimum requirement for
  99.    Windows 95.
  100.  
  101.  - Disk Space--It checks the amount of free disk space on the hard
  102.    disk that contains your existing operating system to determine if
  103.    it meets the minimum (and recommended) requirements for Windows 95.
  104.    It also checks for swap file and boot-drive disk space on hard
  105.    disks that use disk compression.
  106.  
  107.  - Programs--It scans the top three folder levels of all the hard disks
  108.    in your computer for Windows-based programs with significant known
  109.    compatibility issues with Windows 95. Note that for most of these
  110.    programs, upgrades that are fully compatible with Windows 95 are
  111.    now or soon will be available.
  112.  
  113.    NOTE: If Windows 95 System Check does not detect any programs on
  114.    your computer with known compatibility issues, the Your Programs
  115.    page of Windows 95 System Check is skipped.
  116.  
  117. Windows 95 System Check does not perform any of the following tests:
  118.  
  119.  - It does not perform diagnostic tests for hard disk problems (such
  120.    as problems that might be found by hard disk tools such as
  121.    Microsoft ScanDisk).
  122.  
  123.  - It does not detect peripheral hardware devices connected to your
  124.    computer (such as modems and fax/modems).
  125.  
  126.  - It does not perform an analysis or detection of installed
  127.    network resources, network protocols, or network adapters.
  128.  
  129.  - It does not check for computer viruses.
  130.  
  131.  - It does not check program compatibility on shared network
  132.    resources.
  133.  
  134.  - It does not distinguish between 386/SX and 386/DX processors. A
  135.    386/DX or better processor is the minimum requirement for Windows
  136.    95 to ensure good performance. If your computer has a 386/SX
  137.    processor, you can run Windows 95, but performance may be slower.

  139. The Windows 95 Setup program provides warnings for most of the
  140. problems associated with upgrading to Windows 95. In fact, Windows 95
  141. Setup checks the first three items in the above list.
